Before the end of 2016, Studio Spectrum was approached with an opportunity to bid on an AV upgrade project for Beverly Vista Elementary School. The “ASK” was to provide them with AV design and installation services. Shortly after submitting our bid, we were selected as their trusted audio and video specialist. Then, the fun began!
Considering our main goal was to provide the client with an extremely “User friendly” system, we also had to take into account, preserving the rooms aesthetics. The system included JBL Line arrays (Speaker System), Crestron control system with touch screens that would give the user access to source selection, source volume, a small microphone mixer for the wireless microphones on a simple to use touch panel, projector, electric screen, Blu-ray player, digital 12 channel mixer (Auto mixer), input plates at 3 locations for the use of devices with HDMI, and VGA throughout the room and access points for the WIFI. This list was the solution to get the job done but it was the design and the programming that guaranteed we were handing over a system that ensured anyone could easily use the system without breaking it!
Before providing any of the functionality and fulfilling the goals for this project, wiring the speakers, access points, AV wall plates and audio plates in their different locations throughout the room came with its own challenges. We had to creatively use existing conduit and, as mentioned earlier, surface conduit wouldn’t be a solution in a space that the client was really adamant about preserving the aesthetics. Considering we had a limited budget, adding new AV conduit was out the question. Our solution was to use existing conduit and cables to our advantage.
After running one cable, we realized that it would take multiple guys on a cable run to get the job done because we were dealing with 300ft conduit runs that took paths that mimicked a New York City grid. We ultimately managed to get all cables to their destinations and back to the equipment rack after a few unforeseen hiccups. Now that the most challenging part of the job was completed, the rest of this job was smooth sailing. Speakers , projector, electric screen, and equipment rack were ready to be powered on after a week of installation. The best part was seeing programs loaded into the control system and mixer programs up and running, in other words, stepping back and seeing the room fully functioning!
Ultimately, the main goal was to provide the end users with an AV System that would have multiple ways to communicate their message with a user friendly interface while still preserving the room’s aesthetics through out! With the team we had and the resources available, Studio Spectrum was able to complete this project at a high level of excellence. The system is “USER” friendly, flexible and approved by the client as a job WELL DONE!
